Karpoori Thakur, was an Indian politician and social reformer. He was born on January 24, 1924, in Pitaunjhia village in Bihar and he passed away on February 17, 1988. Thakur was an influential leader in Bihar and played a significant role in the state's politics.


He was associated with the socialist movement in India and was a prominent leader of the Samyukta Socialist Party. Karpoori Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar for two non-consecutive terms. His first term was from December 1970 to June 1971, and his second term was from December 1977 to July 1979.


Thakur was known for his efforts to promote social justice and upliftment of the underprivileged sections of society. He implemented policies aimed at reducing economic disparities and improving the condition of the poor. Karpoori Thakur was also an advocate for educational reforms and worked towards making education accessible to all.

So Yes, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced on 23 jan, 2024 that, on 26 jan, 2024 Karpoori Thakur will be posthumously awarded India's highest Civilian Honour, the Bharat Ratna.
